Passenger facilitation at the airport: Challenges and opportunities abound
Airports in the United States have experienced consistent strong growth in passenger volume for almost ten years straight, yet rely on the essentially the same level of Federal resources (people) from the same time period. Industry has worked in collaboration with U.S. Customs and Border Protection to implement technological solutions to mitigate excessive wait times and processing delays, but all parties are now looking to new opportunities to improve throughput and the experience. Add to that the Congressional mandate to implement a biometric exit program at borders around the U.S., and airports are now discussing options for modernizing the passenger experience.
Matt Cornelius joined Airports Council International – North America (ACI–NA) in November 2012 and currently is Vice President, Air Policy. He monitors and advises on U.S., Canadian and international aviation regulations and issues including air service development, airport/airline business relations, passenger facilitation, and leads the organization’s airport-related innovation program. He also serves as the committee secretary to the Facilitation Committee, the Large Hub Airport Committee, and as secretary to the Air Service and Data Planning Working Group.
Prior to ACI-NA, Cornelius served as Airline Affairs Manager with the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority. He also held roles in Frontier Airlines’ finance and commercial strategy departments, and worked in airport operations at Denver International Airport. He began his career with the aviation department of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, where he held various positions in customer service and airport operations.
Cornelius is a graduate of Villanova University, with a degree in business administration, and also holds an MBA from the University of Colorado at Boulder.
