Mobile authentication: Protecting the biometrics that are protecting us
- The motivation for device-independent mobile authentication;
- Securing biometric data and processes on devices;
- Detecting and preventing presentation attacks.
There is little doubt that the days of the password are numbered; largely because biometrics are simply so convenient. But challenges remain in achieving a level of security that would be considered on a par with the lowly password – even given its faults – and the devil is in the detail. This talk will lay out the motivation for device-independent biometric authentication. It will present approaches being pursued to secure biometric information and operations on mobile devices; the companies involved, and the status of the effort. An update on the prevention of presentation attacks, more colloquially referred to as spoof detection, will also be presented. The nature of this security challenge and how it can be addressed will be covered, along with examples of the technology used to detect facial image spoof attempts.
